SELLING BOOKS HAS BECOME A FAMILY BUSINESS.

In 1964 Barrie and Sue Kaye went to a farm sale to buy pigs and came back as fledgling second hand book dealers.

The next year Barrie gave up a well-paid job and together with his Sue they set up K Books selling second handbooks by mail order.

They produced lists on a hand operated spirit duplicator and then progressed to more prestigious catalogues with coloured illustrations and increased their stock from a hundred books to an inventory of over 100,000 items.

Now after 55 years and into their 80’s they have dragged themselves into the 21st century and have established a website and even communicate on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Along the way they have have written a book about their bookselling life which captures some of the characters that they have met over the years

They live and run their business in Allerthorpe with the support of their daughter who’s has now become a second-generation bookseller.

Barrie is still coming up with new ideas of how to reach more people who love and enjoy books – he truly believes that there is a home and owner out there waiting for every book. It’s also about keeping the written word alive in book form in an ever-increasing digital world and it’s very green as it is recycling! Hence the book sale that is taking place on:

Saturday 25 November from 10am – 4pm
at Allerthorpe Village Hall, Allerthorpe, YO42 4RW (next door to the Plough Inn)

On sale will be a range of books: some old, some nearly new, pre-loved … on a range of subjects: art, Folio Society editions, literature, history, travel and exploration, transport, Yorkshire, etc.

It will be the perfect place to start buying Christmas presents and it will be supporting a local and family business.
